DC's Christmas Message

May I take this opportunity to wish you all in Fareham East a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year for 2009.

Since moving to this District from the small area I had before in New Forest South it has been a great challenge for me to move into an area where I new very few people but was welcomed so warmly into this position it has been a fantastic opportunity for me. My personal thanks go to Peter Moody for his unreserved support since I took up this post.

I also wish to thank my District Team for there great support too.

We have worked through various changes to move this district forward and I truly believe we are well on the way to being great for scouting in this area the achievements of our members has been exceptional.

Quick Thinking Scout helps to save pensioner

Charley Dekker was out playing in the park one day when she saw a pensioner in need of help.
The elderly woman was having a heart attack and as others walked on by, Charley went to help. She called 999 and reassured the patient until the Ambulance arrived.
In the meantime a passing nurse also came to her aid.

Charley has now received a top Scouting award, the County Commissioner's Commendation, for her quick thinking and calmness under pressure.

Armistice Day Parade 2008 Thanks

Congratulations to all who attended the Armistice Day Parade on Sunday 9th. I think it was the biggest and best turnout ever, (close to 300 all told of you). At the Mayor's Reception after the church service I was receiving compliments on your behalf from the Mayor and several other dignataries including our District Chairman about how smart you all looked and how well you conducted yourselves during the ceremony.

My thanks too, to the flag and wreath bearers who did their task well and especially to Paul Rutter for organising the parade inside the church grounds.

Give yorselves a BRAVO - very well done.

Dear Leaders and Supporters,

Following me sending out the District Review in September and the Introduction of various items within the District I seem to have made some errors folllowing our meeting which have been brought to my attention. Only one Leader has brought these items to my attention and he has told me that some other leaders feel the same. I would have liked anyone who has a problem with the changes made to have taken time out to talk to me about them. If no one says anything then it is assumed by us that its all ok and thats why I proceeded with sending it out as it was.

Dear Leaders and Supporters,

Please find enclosed the District Review that has come into practise as of the 1st September 2008 and some items from the 1st January 2009. I would ask you all to read through this review carefully and ensure that all these requests are put into practise in your own sections.

Over the last few months as the New DC I have had to deal with some very difficult situations that have made this job very difficult where in some instances they could have been avoided. There are Leaders in sections who I feel seem to be able to do as they like without any thought for District and Scouting protocol in general and I am afraid this is not going to happen anymore. This review is very clear and was discussed at length at the review meeting in July and no one has come back to make any sign of being in disagreement with it so lets make it work.

CRB’s

It is now paramount that everyone who is working with young people must hold a current CRB. The following Instructions are very clear and everyone must comply with the System.
Anyone new to Scouting must complete and fill in a CRB form. The form must be checked either by the GSL or by a designated person nominated by the Executive Committee. [PLEASE NOTE: - Form must be completed in Black Ink.]
Once this form has been checked and signed it must be sent to Mrs Frances Moody for processing. The person may not work within that section or with any young people until the initial CE clearance has come through from Scout HQ. Once this Clearance has been received Frances will inform the Group Scout Leader and that person may then work within the section and supervised by the leader until the full clearance has been confirmed.

It's that time of the Year again and this is my 1st Rememberance Parade as your new DC I therefore am looking for a 100% turnout of all the Groups in Fareham East in Full Dress Uniform as Scouting Policy and Decorations to be worn Please. It will be good to see all Sections and Groups from the District. I would ask that the Explorers go as a District Unit if possible and you are all amicable please.

I have been informed that some Sections have not attended this Parade in previous years and I as the New DC am expecting all GSL's to get there Groups to be at this Parade so please make the Effort.

Acorn Night Hike 2008

It is with great pleasure, we announced that YOU have been selected, to represent your troop to fight against the mighty Gladiators, The ancient legend “Wrinkly” The beautiful Flame, amongst other mighty gladiators.

The training school will be based in the New Forest, and start early evening, exact time to be confirmed upon receipt of team payment.

Teams will need to bring hike tents, (Separate Male / Female tents please)
Parents will be asked to supervised the putting up of tents, and then after a short
Health and Safety briefing, Parents will be asked to take there teams to a checkpoint (about one / two miles from the camp.) ALL teams will start at different checkpoints at the SAME time, and then parents can go home, once they have dropped team off at there start checkpoint, this will be about 7:30pm

Working Party at Everett's Coppice.
Please meet at the Coppice to help with the work that needs doing. The work varies but includes working on the deer fence, tree felling and brushwood clearance.
Please bring your own refreshments and work gear - stout footwear should be worn.
All help appreciated for as long as you are able during the day. Packed lunches advised. Sturdy shoes/boots and working clothes also advised.

Centenary events DVD for sale

A DVD has been produced of the 2007 Centenary events, including a 6 minute video, and all photographs we have of the year, plus national and local news from August 1st, Sunrise Day.

Copies are available from Peter Moody at £ 5.00 each, with all profit going to Jacks House, the new centre for teenagers at Naomi House Childrens Hospice.

24hr Sponsored Skittle Marathon

Watkins Explorer Unit is running a sponsored 24-hour skittle marathon from midday Saturday 19th to midday Sunday 20th July on behalf of 3rd Portchester Scout Group at Cobham Hall to raise money for the Rowans Hospice.

The Group has chosen this charity because members of the Group have lost relatives that were cared for at the Rowans Hospice.

More information on the Rowans Hospice can be found on their website – www.rowanshospice.co.uk

The method of raising funds is by asking individual sponsors to donate £1.00 for each attempt at guessing the total number of skittles to be toppled in 24 hours. There is no limit to the amount of guesses allowed, the more the better.

The Unit is currently approaching local companies and shops to request donations for prizes. This will allow prizes to be awarded for both adults and children who are closest with their guesses.

For this event to succeed support from parents and friends is essential. We would encourage you to join in with the bowling.

There will be refreshments for sale during the event including BBQ food, tea, coffee, sandwiches, sweets, etc. which will raise funds for the Group.

We would like the scouts, leaders, parents, family and friends to attend during the following times:
